What to Wear

I highly recommend Wardrobe Wednesday on facebook for clothing ideas for your session.  Check them out here: http://www.facebook.com/WardrobeWednesday

Families
Coordinate your outfits.  This does not mean everyone should wear the exact same green shirt and tan pair of pants.  That is no fun at all!  But your image will be greatly enhanced if you choose colors that work well together.  Coordination = good.  Matchy-matchy= bad.  Don't be afraid of color and pattern.  Small patterns tend to photograph better than large ones.  If mom is wearing a patterned shirt, no one else should be wearing a competing pattern.  Steer clear of large logos- they can be distracting.  White is a color to avoid- it tends to make everything look bigger in photos.  Keep in mind that you should be dressing for the time of year and the location.  We will probably be walking around and heels may not be the best choice.

When I am trying to build outfits for my own photo sessions, I keep in mind how my family normally dresses because we want to look like ourselves.  We are a nice shirt and jeans kind of family.  I always start with what I want to wear because I am picky about my clothing.  Let's say I decide on a blue plaid shirt with a tan jacket and a pair of jeans.  I choose one of the blues from my shirt and find a polo shirt for my husband to wear- polos are one of his favorite looks.  I then choose a tan button up for my son because it would coordinate with the jacket I plan to wear.  Start with one outfit and build your remaining outfits around it.  Here is a fabulous example of coordinating but not matching:

You can see this family built the clothing around the oldest boy's green, tan and blue plaid shirt.  Everyone is wearing those colors and they look great.  Take the time to put thought into your outfits- it will greatly enhance your session.

Newborns
Newborns photograph best without clothing.  If you have a special outfit you would like to use, please bring it with you to the session.  If you have any special props, please bring those as well.

Children
Choose comfortable clothing for your children.  They won't be happy if they are wearing something itchy or uncomfortable and it will show in their portraits.  Layering looks great as well as fun textures and patterns.  Again, comfort is key.

Seniors
Bring a variety of outfits to your session.  We will discuss where you would like to shoot in advance and outfits you are thinking of wearing.  A variety of colors and types of clothing will give you many looks to choose from.  Trendy clothing can be fun for a few shots, but remember you will probably be looking at these pictures on a parent's wall for the rest of your life.  Choose timeless looks as much as possible.
